Recall Shawn Brandt of the Reading School Committee

-Our Kids Deserve Better-

Why the Recall?

As School Committee members and elected officials, they are all bound by a crystal-clear ethics policy. This policy is meant to provide a baseline expectation that the people who elected them, can expect about their function and behavior while in office. Among the many elements within this policy, several come to mind as being relevant to today’s discussion:
     • School Committee Members should realize that their primary responsibility is to the education and safety of children.
     • Realize that your basic function is to be policy making and  not Administrative.
     • Remember that they always represent the entire community.
     • Be well informed concerning the actions of your fellow   committee members on a state and federal level.
     • Accept that this role is one of “unselfish service” and agree to, in no way, shape or form “play politics”.
     • Endeavor to establish sound, clearly defined policies which will both DIRECT and support the Administration.
     • Refer ALL Complaints to Administrative Staff for solution and ONLY discuss them in meetings if solutions fail.

On March 29th, Shawn Brandt requested and received access to 273 emails that were part of a public records request by a friend of his. Contained in those emails were private personally identifiable information related to special needs students on Individual Education Plans and other personal details. Shawn Brandt had an ethical duty to report these issues to the Superintendent but his inaction allowed them spread online to a public website by way of former Chair of the Reading Select Board, Andy Friedman on April 15th.

Additional details and evidence will be coming out over the course of the next couple weeks. #EthicsMatter
